Quick Designer Tips!!
-Hang your drapes high and wide!!  Layering a woven shade or roman blind behind the drapery rod is a great way to camouflage the gap of wall space between your rod and the window frame.  Buying a rod that is at least 20″wider than your window frame will allow you to stack your drapery over the frame and wall instead of the window.  This will allow all the natural light from the window to come through and make your window appear larger.

-Buy the bigger rug!!  Having all your furniture sit on top of the rug will make your room feel larger and more unified.

-Hang your artwork at “Eye Level” which is on average 66″ on center…..adjust the height depending on the size of artwork and how it fits on the wall.  (taller walls and larger artwork may need to be hung a little higher)  Pay attention to the composition of the peice and the viewing distance……having more detail in a piece of artwork means it needs to be seen up close, use less detailed and larger compositions for items to be hung on two story walls or with further viewing distances.

-For those who like to change the style of their rooms often…….buy quality neutral colored furniture that can be accented with colorful pillows, throws, rugs, and accessories so you can change your space every season, holiday, or just to show off current color/style trends.

-Use dimmer switches!!  Layered lighting is key to any successful design.  Adjustable controls give you the ability to best use each fixture to their full potential and intended use.   For example, can lights can be used for all purposes -general, task, or decorative lighting, but if the only setting is full bright light (used for a task purpose),  it will wash out or cause glare because it is too bright when using it as a general/ambient light or decorative light.
Getting Started on Your Project
The hardest part of “getting started on your project” can often be where to start!  You know you want to make changes, have a lot of ideas, but you are unsure how all these ideas relate to each other and if they will work when the final product come together……..these are very common responses that I hear all the time.  Here are some basic steps I recommend to get started:
  • Define what you want to accomplish with this project…..function, style, budget, timeline?
  • How does the space need to function……describe for what activity, for whom, and when?
  • What “feeling” do you want the space to have……open/airy, cozy, relaxing, energetic, etc.

  • Do you have a color palette in mind
  • What colors do you personally love or hate
Color Palette
  •  What architectural elements are there to work with……is there a natural focal point, or do you need to create new one?
  • move walls, change or keep doors, windows, ceilings, lighting, flooring, etc.?
  • do you want to make the space feel larger, smaller, taller, shorter, lighter, darker, etc.?
Circular Window is an architectural focal point
  • Are there any elements you love, hate or that you are missing?
  • How much of the work do you want to do or hire out……do you currently have people you want to work with or need help finding skilled contractors?  consider budget…..what work can and should be done at one time or in phases?
  • Now it is time to get started………hiring an interior designer will help you create, organize, advise, and execute…….we are here to help you with as much or as little as YOU need us to!
Design Influences
As a designer, I often get asked what inspires my design concepts for both residential and commercial design projects.  The top inspiration for me is my client and what they are trying to achieve within the space.  This will dictate the functionality of the space, then it is my job to incorporate style into the functionality to form a complete vision.  Style influences come from the architecture of the space and a feeling we are trying to achieve.  To achieve these “feelings”  we look at influences from nature, fashion, art, textiles, or by a simple color or line we want to build from.   For the client that doesn’t know where to start, I suggest looking through photo galleries, choosing their favorite locations, or picking out a favorite item -fabric, clothing, jewelry, art, etc. and then explaining to me what they love about that object.  Simple or complex,  these items are a way for me to begin building your dream without you having to verbalize exactly what you want.
